About Silkwood - Silkwood Studio

My Story

Growing up, both my Grandad and Dad took photos so I was always around cameras. But I have to confess, I wasn’t really interested in photography then.

Now it couldn’t be more different – I’m passionate about photography!  I’m at my happiest when I’m creating different looks and styles, and experimenting with new ideas and techniques.

The change came about when I realised how important it is to capture moments; neither my Grandad or Dad are around any more but their pictures are, and they help me to remember them and the times we shared together.

When my children were born I took pictures galore of them.  That was back in the day of analogue cameras and film. I’ve been documenting their life stages and our family memories ever since.

I used to be a teacher, so when I began as a professional photographer in 2008 I worked with nurseries and playgroups.  It was a great experience capturing those innocent smiles and charming little personalities. It’s hard to believe those children will be teenagers now!

I’ve also photographed dance show rehearsals and my husband and I still do dance shoots at Silkwood Studio. Children from 5 years old and upwards come to dance and pose. It’s a wonderful feeling to capture their grace and poise and then show them how amazing they look, helping them build their self-confidence.

I also love doing our “All About You Experiences”.  People enjoy being pampered during their makeover, and I enjoy amazing them with the creativity and variety of the photos I take, and seeing how confident they become.

I’m licensed with the independent body, the SWPP (Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers).  I’m currently working on the next level up of professional qualification – Associate.

Silkwood Studio Story

I love my studio as much as I love my photography.

It was such a blank canvas when we moved in to.

The studio was an old carpet mill with large windows giving amazing natural light so we instantly saw its potential in 2016.  After spending 2 months cleaning it out and painting it we set about designing individual spaces that would allow us to be really creative.

We’d visited many other photography studios so we funnelled the best from each of those into our own studio.  We have a 4 metre infinity cove, a variety of solid and paper backgrounds, props, and a full set of studio lights with modifiers as well as all that daylight. We continually develop the designs, and it has infinite scope in its 3000 square foot of space to become whatever you want.

It’s popular with film makers, other photographers both amateur and commercial and students

We offer the following services at Silkwood Studio:

  • Business Portraiture for professional business-like portraits, or something a little more creative.
  • Model workshop evenings where we photograph unique individuals, teaching lighting, posing and camera settings to other photographers to develop their portfolio.
  • Aerial Hoop portraits.  Even non-experts can sit on the hoop and look very graceful for a portrait with a difference. Even though the hoop looks high, it is only a few feet up!
  • “Creative portraits” where we style a specific look for you using a mixture of make-up, props, wigs, hats and accessories.

If you’re looking for creative photography with a difference near Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax, Brighouse, Wakefield or Shipley, we’re within easy reach.  Silkwood Studio is ideally situated in Cleckheaton just off Junction 26 on the M62.
